A Look into Monthly SEO Reporting

Monthly SEO Reports

Monthly SEO reports are just as crucial for my clients as for me. My clients see how their SEO performs by paying me to work on their site. For me, it reflects my strategy, where I want to go next, and, more importantly, a sense of purpose that my work significantly impacts others.

My SEO Reports in a Nutshell

Every SEO report that I create is custom-made for each client. Some clients like to see keyword ranking reports, while others want to have bullet points to share with their management team on the SEO performance. Since each piece is tailored to the client, there is no cookie-style report, which means each takes about an hour and a half to complete.

The SEO Report for Clients

All reports overlap even though I customize it for a client. For example, every report summarizes what was done, the traffic, and keyword ranking reports. Most reports also include a “what is next” section where I go into more detail about what the month will have with me and them working together.

The SEO Report for Me

I manage my clients using a handful of tools and my whiteboard behind me to monitor them and stay on target with projects. For example, I use Trello, Microsoft to Do, Slack, Microsoft Teams, SEMRush, Microsoft Outlook calendar, Skype, my actual whiteboard behind me, and many sticky notes. I stay organized and copy most of my project to-do’s into multiple tools to avoid forgetting what to do.

The report allows me to summarize everything for that month in one place. For example, my internal Trello Board of everything I did goes directly into the summary section in the notes. The keyword ranking wins (or losses) go into the report from SEMRush. As does the traffic summary from Google Analytics. All the tools I use to monitor a website go into one place.

The report itself is generally shared internally with my client’s team, so I have to make sure my report is as easy to follow for anyone who only chats with me occasionally.

The Report + Next Steps

Most clients talk with me a day or two after getting the report. The calls last 30 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on what must be said. I’ve had some clients since 2017, and we still chat monthly to review the report and ask questions.

The Report is Rewarding

I think the SEO space has, unfortunately, a sleazy perception of people. For example, some people in my area sell SEO for $199 a month, whereas in 2023, I start my pricing at $1.6k. One of the most common questions is, “Why should I pay you your rate when someone else is charging it for $199.”

The truth is, I have a different business plan from companies selling SEO for $199. A $199 contract works to obtain as many SEO clients as possible, and they understand that they will lose some along the way. The price ($199) is cheap enough that most clients feel they can spend a few thousand dollars over a year to feel frustrated that nothing is working for them. Again, it’s a business model I have no interest in.  If I were to earn the same, I would rather have a handful of high-paying clients who achieve great results than twenty who are mostly frustrated with me.

I understand my price can be steep for some, so I work incredibly hard to ensure my clients see results within the first 3- 6 months. Getting a client to rank on page 1 (or position 1) and see an increase in leads or sales from SEO efforts is the most rewarding part of this career for me. These reports that I work on reflect that hard work, and when I see the results, and they tell me they are seeing results from their end, it makes my job so satisfying.
